Lifestyle newborn baby photographer Manchester Lancashire Cheshire

Lifestyle newborn photography is very different from studio/posed newborn photography.  It’s more relaxed and free flowing with a focus on simplicity, connection and storytelling in the comfort of your own home.  I specialise in natural, honest newborn photography, based in Stockport Manchester.  I am also available for newborn sessions Lancashire, Cheshire and Derbyshire.  This blog post highlights what to expect when you book Ginger & Lime Photography and answers questions about what to wear, how to prepare your home.

Is there an age limit for newborn photography?

This really depends on what you want.  If you really want photos of your sweet, new baby asleep and dreamy, then it’s best to do your session within the first 10-16 days.  If you’re happy with more awake, interactive images of your new baby, a session can take place anytime in the first three months.

What do we wear?  What does baby wear?

I always suggest neutral, some pops of colour, textures and COMFORTABLE.  I love bright, airy, whites, greys, bright pops of colour and simplicity when it comes to newborn photography.  You don’t want your family to be too matchy-matchy, but you will want to coordinate.  For baby you are free to have a few outfit options to use through the session.  One might be a simple bonds wondersuit, another might be a daytime outfit with some amazing prints, texture or colour and you might want some images of baby wrapped in your favourite muslin or special blanket.  Your session need to represent YOU and your family honestly as possible.  Before your session, feel free to send me photos and ideas and I will be happy to give you wardrobe advice.

How do we prepare our house?

Before I arrive to your home, please be sure to crank up the heat to between 75 and 85 degrees.  Although I bring a limited number of props, there may be times I photograph your baby nude in  baskets or bowls.  Babies do not like being naked and cold and they have no trouble letting us know that. I want your baby to be as happy as possible.I may be photographing in all areas of your home. Please make sure that your home is clutter free as anything left out may end up in your images. Removing items while I’m there cuts into the time I have to photograph and can sometimes hinder the flow of the session. Newborns sleep best with a full belly. If you are breastfeeding and would like for me to capture this moment, try to wait until I arrive to feed. If this is something you are uncomfortable with, please feed your baby before I arrive. Ultimately I will only shoot in the areas with the best natural light.

About the actual session.

I usually arrive with my camera and a (very large) coffee in hand, kick my shoes off and ask for a tour of your home.  Here we will chat, go over the details we have discussed, I’ll fawn over your sweet new baby, become BFF’s with your other children, I’ll get familiar with your space, the light and I’ll give you a run down of the shot list and my plan for your session. At every newborn session I follow the baby’s lead, or if there is a toddler running around, they are boss for the day.  I have a loose order in which I shoot, but I keep that completely flexible depending on feed times, cuddle breaks and toddlers being toddlers.  I give direction and guidance to a point, such as positioning you in the best light, asking you to look at each other, look at your baby etc but mostly I am just creating a space and opportunities for connections to happen naturally.  We usually start in the master bedroom, move to the nursery/kids bedrooms and then to the main living area.  If you have a second, outdoor location, this happens after the in-home session. I may spend up to 3 hours photographing your baby.  I allow enough time for your baby to eat, for me to clean up messes and settle your baby if needed. I will have wraps and headbands to match with the props I bring.  We can discuss colours  before I pack everything. Dresses tend to swallow newborns.  I suggest dressing your baby in a onesie.  Please refrain from anything frilly. Feel free to incorporate any blankets or other personal items.  For you and your spouse, creams or neutral colours are timeless.

When will we get our photos?

You will receive a password-protected, online gallery within two weeks of your session.  Here you will be able to view, download and share all web-sized images from your session. Your beautiful USB containing your high-resolution images with print release, and your gift prints will be posted to you within 3 weeks after your session.
